alQaws Fellowship 2021: Palestine Through the Lens of Queer Politics

alQaws Fellowship:

Palestine Through the Lens of Queer Politics

(3-month; part-time; Depending on Covid situation, either  remote or based in Jerusalem, Palestine)

alQaws for Sexual and Gender Diversity in Palestinian Society is seeking a fellow for a three-month political education program focused on cross-border networking, knowledge-sharing, and movement building for LGBTQ Palestinians.

For over a decade, alQaws has shown that LGBTQ Palestinians are an integral and active part of our society. This fellowship invites LGBTQ Palestinians outside Palestine to strengthen the ties with our political home.

For 3 months, the fellow will work part-time with alQaws staff and activists, allowing the fellow ample time to pursue their own projects. This fellowship will either be remote or out of alQaws’ Jerusalem office, depending on COVID-19 work and travel advisories for summer 2021.

The fellow will continue developing anti-Pinkwashing programming, including an educational campaign that was started by the previous fellow. The fellow will also be responsible for sustaining a network of people outside Palestine who want to engage with alQaws’ work, who desire a meaningful connection to Palestine, and are interested in queer political organizing that centers de-colonial, feminist, and holistic approaches to intersecting forms of oppression. This will include building a structure and a database for the network, as well as managing and communicating with network members, and identifying organizing opportunities for this growing network.

As the fellowship aims to create genuine engagement and connection, the fellow will be integrated into local alQaws’ grassroots community and work, but will also be invited and expected to share their experience and expertise to advance the goal of this fellowship. Depending on the fellow’s area of work (academic, activist, artist, professional, etc.), this may take the form of a lecture, a skill-sharing or knowledge-building workshop, an event, an exhibition, or something else.

Main Tasks:

The fellow will be involved in developing and implementing the following tasks:

  • Community building/transnational networking including: building the network and organizing a community event in the US for alQaws.

  • Developing 1-2 side projects based on fellow’s expertise. Examples could include: social/media based projects, anti-pinkwashing initiatives, writing tasks, etc.

  • Learning from local grassroots movements as well as sharing outside knowledge and skills that would benefit the local  community

What is alQaws looking for in the fellow?

  • A queer Palestinian activist connected to youth movements and living/based in the US

  • Prior involvement in community or campus-based organizing

  • Commitment to anti-colonial feminist queer values

  • Proficiency in Arabic and a willingness to learn more

  • Ability to work in a dynamic work culture, independently as well as collaboratively, using shared leadership values
